The famous slasher series is back, delivering fresh kills, jump scares and a killer new cast! But don’t forget a couple of the OG’s!

The plot takes place 27 years after the Tower Bay murders, when another hook-wielding killer appears and begins targeting a group of friends one year after they covered up a car crash in which they supposedly killed someone.

I Know What You Did Last Summer succeeded in having a blend of horror and comedy that works. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously and played into the over the top and often at times unrealistic storyline.

It is evident the new ‘slasher film genre’ leans heavily into a self-aware and comedic tone, embracing the genre’s clichés rather than running from them.

In this reboot this approach plays out and it’s clear the filmmakers know their audience is well-versed in slasher tropes. This approach has been done to death and ultimately falls short, resulting in a film that delivers neither thrills or laughs. It would be a pleasant surprise to watch a horror film that took itself seriously.

The return of Freddie Prince Jr and Jennifer Love Hewitt was needed, returning as Ray and Julie – the only survivors of the murderous fisherman they outsmarted in two films. The film briefly touches on how both characters continue to deal with the trauma from the past.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is an enjoyable watch for fans of the slasher genre but the film didn’t add anything new to the series. Horror fans will be disappointed with the minimal jump scares, lack of suspense and the film’s formulaic and predictable plot.
