Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” pulled in $11.7 million domestically at the box-office on Friday, a massive 80% drop on its previous Friday haul. That’s a Friday-to-Friday drop on par with “Thor: Love and Thunder”.
With Saturday numbers now coming in, estimates for the film’s second weekend are on track for a $40-45 million haul, which should bring its domestic total to just around $200 million after ten days.
Unfortunately, it means a 66% drop off in its second weekend – much closer to the kind of drop seen by “Captain America: Brave New World” (68%) than by “Thunderbolts” (56%) or “Superman” (53%) with the latter hitting $236.2 million by the end of its second weekend.
Despite initially strong numbers from the Marvel faithful, it seems the film lacks traction with general audiences. That said, the film looks like to surpass the full domestic box-office totals of both the previous MCU films this year by Monday.
Another question will be international numbers (released tomorrow) where the film opened well last weekend. Will they see a slump like the domestic ones?
Also hitting this weekend domestically was DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys 2” which is headed for a $22 million opening which is about on par with the first film.
The critically well-received “The Naked Gun” reboot is headed for a $16 million opening weekend with exit polls reportedly showing excellent scores – suggesting the film should have legs.
“James Gunn’s “Superman” will take in $13.5 million in its fourth weekend, down 46%, and by end of weekend should be at $316 million domestically. It’s expected the film will likely end its States-side run somewhere around $350 million.
Rounding out the top five is “Jurassic World Rebirth” with $8.1 million and is expected to hit $317 million by end of Sunday. It’ll likely end its run around the $340 million mark.
The other opener was the Dave Franco & Alison Brie-led body horror “Together” which looks to pull in $6-7 million for Friday-Sunday and $10-11 million since it opened on Wednesday – its numbers comparable to Ari Aster’s “Midsommar”.
