The post-Labor Day weekend box-office used to be a dead zone, but that all changed in 2017 when the first “IT” film debuted to a $123.4 million opening weekend.
Since then, the weekend has been seen as one primed for horror fare with “The Nun” and last year’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” landing strong debuts.
Early tracking figures for the slot are now in with “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the final film in the hit supernatural franchise, set to make its debut on Friday September 5th.
Those projections indicate the film is currently tracking for a $35-40 million debut – a major improvement on the third mainline entry “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” in 2021, which was one of the day-and-date pandemic-era HBO Max titles but still managed a $24.1 million opening weekend debut.
The first “The Nun” film in this release slot still has the biggest opening weekend of the overall franchise at $53.8 million.
Women of all ages and men under 25 are reportedly the most interested, while compared to early days of tracking the film is currently charting ahead of strong genre openers like “Alien: Romulus” at $42 million and “Insidious: Red Door” at $33 million.
