A Virginia woman and her 8-month-old daughter who vanished in 2017 were murdered by the child’s father, police announced on Monday.
Keir Johnson, 34, and her daughter Chloe were reported missing after they were a no-show for a gathering at Buckroe Beach — prompting an AMBER Alert for the infant 11 days later. Though Johnson’s vehicle was found in Newport News two weeks after their reported disappearance, the AMBER Alert was eventually deactivated and their whereabouts are still a mystery.
However, Newport News police Chief Steve Drew said the missing baby’s father, Carlos Johnson, 46, was arrested at a traffic stop for her and his ex-girlfriend’s slayings. The mother’s sister told WTKR that Keir and Carlos Johnson were not married but their last names are the same.
The sister also claimed Keir and Carlos Johnson were separated when she vanished with her daughter.
Police searched a grassy area near the trailer park where Keir Johnson’s vehicle was discovered but it did not uncover any clues, according to the Daily Press.
Carlos Johnson is charged with his ex-girlfriend and daughter’s first-degree murders even though their bodies were never discovered. A $35,000 reward for information in this case remains active.
“Even though someone has been arrested, the job is only beginning,” Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwyn told reporters on Monday. “Even though somebody has been arrested, we know that in the last seven years, there are people in this community who have information about this case that can help bring closure to a family that has suffered for seven years, almost eight.”
