Warner Bros. Pictures

A film once destined for streaming, Warner Bros. Pictures must be very happy today as their revival of the “Final Destination” horror franchise has been a smash hit.

“Final Destination: Bloodlines” has debuted to a superb $102 million opening worldwide – an even split of $51 million domestic and $51 million internationally. Overseas that is by far the best debut of the long-running franchise.

Domestically, it shattered expectations. Buoyed by good reviews and word of mouth, it has broken the record for the biggest opening for an R-rated horror movie this decade, overtaking the “Sinners” debut of $48 million.

While it’s not expected to have the staying power of that film, it is quite certain to become the highest grossing entry in the franchise. Combined with an economic $50 million budget, it marks the third winner in a row for Warners following “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners”.

Not faring so well was the other newcomer this weekend, Lionsgate’s “Hurry Up Tomorrow”. The Weeknd & Jenna Ortega-led film which debuted in sixth place with just $3.2 million.

The film is a quintessential example of how a lot of followers, talk and ‘activation’ on social media are for nothing if the film itself is a dog. The movie was widely panned, and combined with last year’s high-profile “The Idol” failure it feels like The Weeknd’s hopes of an acting crossover are dead.

“Thunderbolts” will come in second with $15.5 million domestically, followed by “Sinners” in third with $15 million, “A Minecraft Movie” in fourth with $5.9 million and “Accountant 2” in fifth with $4.5 million.
