That’s right, it’s termite season in Beijing; unfortunately, hot and humid weather is the perfect condition for the pesky insects.

The extreme peak of termite armageddon occurs during the rainy season (which usually starts in June and runs through August). Termite swarming, which is when they produce winged reproductive adults, often occurs after a warm rain. They will be in the air – and trying to invade houses – until late July or the beginning of August.

According to exterminators, the flying pests are most active from noon to 3pm, and feed mainly on dead plants, leaf litter, cellulose, animal dung, and wood – which means residents living in the hutongs with old wooden beams will likely see some unwelcome visitors come a knockin’.

The Forbidden City in Beijing faces a persistent problem with termites, and their activity is increasing due to climate change, threatening the historic wooden structures and precious artifacts within the landmark.

Studies have shown that termite activity has increased in Beijing during the last few years and efforts to contain the problem have been stepped up, including multiple technological advances.

An extensive system has been implemented to protect a large area of the Forbidden City, using numerous bait stations with special devices designed to lure termites and infect them with a poisonous powder.

Exhibition halls and storage rooms containing organic artifacts are prioritized for prevention and control measures, as well as courtyards and buildings where termites are known to thrive.

Capable of squeezing through tiny gaps, if your house is getting swarmed, install window screens and try covering cracks in doors and walls with barrier strips.

If that doesn’t help, it might be time to call in the exterminators, who use chemicals and sprays to keep the bugs at bay.
