Sega’s 1986 arcade driving adventure “OutRun” is the latest video game to get the adaptation treatment at Universal Pictures.
Michael Bay (“Transformers” franchise, “Ambulance”) is set to direct. Sydney Sweeney (“Anyone But You,” “Immaculate”) will produce. Bay and Brad Fuller will produce through Platinum Dunes’ first-look deal with Universal Pictures. Toru Nakahara (“Sonic the Hedgehog” 1-3, “Knuckles,” “Golden Axe”) will produce for Sega and Sega Corporation president/COO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project on behalf of Sega.
Universal’s Executive Vice President of Production Development Matt Reilly and Senior Vice President of Production Development Ryan Jones will oversee the project for the studio.
Jayson Rothwell (“Polar,” “Arachnid”) is set to write the screenplay. Plot details are being kept under wraps.
Sega’s “OutRun” series is a franchise that originated from some of the most successful arcade games in the world during the 1980s. The game pioneered a new genre of driving games and spawned an entire electronic music subgenre, aptly called “OutRun.” This unique approach made it a worldwide hit, prompting numerous subsequent series installments including home console versions. It continues to be one of Sega’s flagship franchises.

“OutRun” continues Universal’s hot streak in the game adaptation world after “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which grossed over $1.4 billion and $290 million, respectively, at the global box office.
Bay is represented by Rich Cook at Range Media Partners. Sweeney is represented by Paradigm, imPRint and Stewart Brookman at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, etc. Rothwell is represented by Cliff Roberts at Syndicate Entertainment, and Austin Williams at Sloan Offer Weber & Dern.
