A TV series remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1987 vampire neo-Western cult classic “Near Dark” is reportedly in the works at A24.
The InSneider broke the news and reports that Bigelow herself is involved in some capacity in the project, but it’s not clear what and how deep that involvement goes at present.
The news comes as indie distribution darling A24 is getting more into genre TV production, the company is also currently developing the “Friday the 13th” prequel series “Crystal Lake”.
The bloody road movie stars Adrian Pasdar as a young man in a small Oklahoma town who meets a mysterious female drifter (Jenny Wright) who bites him and runs off. He realises he’s been turned into a vampire and becomes involved with her family of nomadic vampires.
Co-starring the “Aliens” trio of Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein, the film received mostly positive reviews at the time with Paxton’s performance in particular as the unhinged member of the group often singled out.
Bigelow subsequently went on to direct “Blue Steel,” “Point Break” and “Strange Days” shortly after this. She currently has an untitled White House thriller in the works which is targeting a Fall release this year.
