The recent release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” marks the third live-action iteration of Marvel’s First Family to hit the screen in the past twenty years.
Before Pedro Pascal took on the role of Mr. Fantastic, Ioan Gruffudd and Miles Teller played the part in 2005 and 2015 respectively. To this day, Gruffudd remains the only one to have taken on the role twice – at least until “Avengers: Doomsday” opens next year.
These days, the Welsh “Hornblower” star is more known for TV work like “Harrow,” though occasionally pops up in film, such as last year’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”.
In a new interview with Vulture, he confirmed there had been plans for a third “Fantastic Four” film in their series after 2007’s “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” but those plans were scrapped:
“The mindset was that we were going to do three, and I think the second movie was equally successful as the first and equally enjoyable for the fans. I particularly loved working with Doug Jones [as the Silver Surfer] on that movie, who’s just a terrific artist and an expert in the field of movement.
If you want to witness somebody bringing a character to life physically, he’s just untouchable. So there was definitely that sort of momentum, and the plan was to do three movies, but these decisions are beyond my control.”
Gruffudd previously revealed back in 2020 he sought therapy after the franchise ended as the films weren’t the boost to his career as expected and he was forced to say goodbye to the character:
“As an actor, you almost grieve every part that you’ve played, and this was no different. This was a massive stepping stone in my career, and because this was two movies over several years, the character becomes part of you. So I think the grieving process is that you’ve enjoyed the character so much and you’re not getting to play them again.”
Gruffudd says he remains proud of his two films, even attending the premiere of the new one last month. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is playing in cinemas now.
