Twenty years on, and David Simon’s iconic drama “The Wire” on HBO is a show that still tops many ‘Greatest TV Series of All Time’ lists alongside the likes of “Breaking Bad,” “Twin Peaks” and fellow HBO alum “The Sopranos”.
Part of the draw was its specificity – set entirely around the city of Baltimore, each season explored issues of institutional dysfunction within the larger societal system – cops, criminals, port workers, politicians, school students, and the press.
It’s the definition of slow burn, a massive narrative sprawl that takes a good amount of time to reveal the full scale and ambition of what it’s trying to achieve, and once fully revealed, it’s a work that has aged like a fine wine.
One of its stars is Tony winner Wendell Pierce, who recently spoke with Collider and says – does not warrant a reboot as the show’s themes were very prescient and we’re seeing how that plays out today:
“The Wire is something that is classic. What makes it classic is that it speaks to the audience then, it speaks to us now, and it will speak to audiences long after it’s over.
The cautionary tale that it was, the fact that it lets people know there’s an ugly side of human nature. We’re seeing that demonstrated today. I mean as we stand here on wonderful beautiful Hollywood Boulevard, they have American secret police who raided MacArthur Park today with guns drawn on citizens for no reason.
That’s a dangerous thing. That’s why The Wire is so poignant. It was a canary in the mine then and it’s a canary in the mine now. What kind of society do we want to be a part of?”
Michael B. Jordan, who co-starred in the series, echoed similar sentiments when promoting “Sinners” earlier this year, saying more explicitly he would love to see the show remain without a reboot or recast: “Just leave it. Leave it where it is… I don’t want to see The Wire rebooted at all.”
Dominic West, Idris Elba, Michael Kenneth Williams, John Doman, Sonja Sohn, Lance Reddick, Andre Royo, Aidan Gillen and Domenick Lombardozzi starred in the series.
