Oscar-winning director Paweł Pawlikowski is in production on his first feature since his 2018 hit “Cold War.”
Details of the film, which have been kept under wraps, have finally emerged with shooting now underway in Poland, Germany and Italy, and Mubi and Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani’s Our Films on board as production companies.
Entitled “1949” and written by Pawlikowski and Henk Handloegten, the film stars Academy Award nominee Sandra Hüller (“Zone of Interest,” “Anatomy of a Fall”) and Hanns Zischler (“Munich,” “The Universal Theory”) alongside August Diehl (“A Hidden Life,” “Inglourious Basterds”), Anna Madeley (“Patrick Melrose,” “All Creatures Great And Small”) Devid Striesow (“All Quiet On The Western Front”), and Theo Trebs (“The White Ribbon”).
Set at the height of the Cold War, “1949” centers on the relationship between the writer Thomas Mann (Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Hüller), an actress, journalist and rally driver, as they embark on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a Germany in ruins — from U.S. dominated Frankfurt to Soviet controlled Weimar.

The film sees Pawlikowski pick up where he left off with both his Oscar-winning “Ida” and three-time Oscar nominee “Cold War,” exploring the themes of identity, guilt, family and love, amid the turmoil and moral confusion of post War Europe.
Producers include Mubi, Our Films (Italy), Extreme Emotions (Poland), Nine Hours (Germany) and Chapter2 (France), in collaboration with Circle One (Italy). Both Our Films and Chapter2 are part of French giant Mediawan. The film is produced by Our Films’ Gianani and Mieli, Extreme Emotions’ Ewa Puszczynsk, Nine Hours’ Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger, Chapter2’s Dimitri Rassam and Circle One’s Lorenzo Gangarossa.
Pawlikowski reunites with his longtime filmmaking team, which includes the Academy Award nominated cinematographer Lukasz Zal, costume designer Aleksandra Staszko, editor Piotr Wójcik, production designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński and composer Marcin Marsecki.
Earlier this year, Mubi stuck a three-year co-production, financing and distribution agreement with Our Films, the new Rome-based company founded by prominent Gianani and Mieli. Mieli previously collaborated with Mubi on Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Pablo Larraín’s “Maria” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.
